The Pearson Language Tests, which has developed the prestigious international language tests: London Tests of English (LTE), has awarded Skrivanek Czech Republic the best performing Test Centre of the Year Award for 2008 for the Czech Republic.
Skrivanek excelled through the professionalism, continual implementation of the highest standards, promotion and enthusiasm with which all Skrivanek employees supported and continue to support these international language tests.
In 2007 Skrivanek received an accreditation from PLT to act as International Test Centre. This authorized Skrivanek to administer London Tests of English and the London Tests of English for children. These tests are recognized worldwide. Since then Skrivanek has contributed to many students success by, in addition to testing, also offering excellent, word class preparatory courses at all of its Czech branches.
PLT is one of the largest education and media companies in the world and Skrivanek is proud that we live up to their most demanding requirements- and that we managed to be one of the first in the country to receive this prestigious award. Our commitment to excellence, also for students, means that Skrivanek will continue to meet and exceed the strict PLT criteria, and to ensure that the integrity of the testing is upheld.
For the past ten years, Unesco has proclaimed February 21th as International Mother Language Day. This year the date also signifies the end of the International Year of Languages. In light of these two events, Skrivanek Ljubljana signed an agreement of cooperation with the Department of Translation at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana.
By signing the agreement, Skrivanek has solidified its relationship with the highly respected educational institution that has played a valuable role in the edification and formal training of many of our co-workers.
Now, in the coming academic year, Skrivanek will give some of the students from the Department of Translation the opportunity to complete their work practice in the very environment where intercultural mediators, translators, interpreters and doctors of science from the field of translation are conducting their studies.
»After the Slovenian accession to EU, the demand for Slovenian translators has been growing rapidly, and with it, also the interest for linguist programmes. We are delighted by the fact that by signing the agreement on cooperation with the Skrivanek translation company, we gained an additional opportunity for our students to perform their work practice, which will bring them valuable working experience,« said Vojko Gorjanc, Prof. PhD, Head of the Department of Translation.
At the end of 2008 Skrivanek completed translation of the prestigious six-language brochures about the Czech Republic, which was a project awarded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.
The brochures have been translated from Czech into English, German, Russian, French, Portuguese and Spanish, and in addition we provided final pre-print proofreading/editing.
These wonderfully vivid forty-page brochures will be distributed through the Czech Embassies and Consulates throughout the world during the 2009 Czech Presidency of the European Union. Their main aim is to provide a comprehensive picture of the country, its economy, culture, infrastructure and tourism. Another objective is attracting foreign investors and professionals. The brochures also encourage tourists to visit not only the traditional and world famous, but to also enjoy some of the less well known places in this beautiful country in the heart of Europe.

The winners of the joint University of Latvia and Skrivanek Latvia new translator competition were awarded on 18 December in the University’s Modern Language Faculty.
According to the evaluation of the highly qualified jury, the highest score and first place went to first-year Modern Languages Faculty M.A. student Rita Garnizone, who translated from English into Latvian. Her prize includes a trip to Prague, a chance to visit the Skrivanek Latvia parent company, Skrivanek Group, and a guided tour of the city of a thousand golden spires.
Students from all faculties of the University of Latvia took part in the competition. A total of 162 students from all University of Latvia faculties applied for the competition, which took place in two rounds. In the first round, students were invited to submit text translations from a source language of their choice into English, German or French. The authors of the 10 best translations were then invited for the second round of the competition. Three students in particular withstood the fierce competition from their predominantly Modern Language Faculty competitors, making it to the second round. For this feat, Skrivanek Latvia presented them with Skrivanek Language School gift cards. The cards will help the three on their way to supplementing their foreign language knowledge in one of the highest course levels, or even to start learning a new foreign language.
Skrivanek is pleased to support the newcomers to the translation industry and hopes the event will draw interest from many talented translators who will follow the path of the emerging translation and localization business.
